American Curl

American Curl *
The American Curl is one of the cat world’s most enchanting surprises, instantly recognisable by its trademark ears that curl back like a delicately choreographed ballet. This elegant and curious breed originated not in ancient civilizations but in suburban California in the early 1980s. The breed’s story began in 1981, when Joe and Grace Ruga found a stray black kitten with uniquely curled ears in Lakewood, California. They named her Shulamith, and she went on to become the foundation of a new breed. What began as a natural genetic mutation soon gained scientific and breeding interest. Through collaboration with geneticists such as Roy Robinson and the efforts of ethical breeding programs, the American Curl was officially recognized by TICA in 1987 and the CFA in 1993.
The most distinctive feature of the American Curl is its arched, backward-curving ears. Kittens are born with straight ears, which begin curling within the first week, eventually forming a graceful crescent arc between 90° and 180° by around four months. The ears are firm yet flexible and must be handled with care. Physically, the breed is moderately sized, with a rectangular body, medium bone structure, and a silky, resilient coat. Longhair and shorthair varieties both exist, each with minimal undercoat. Accepted in all colours and patterns, the American Curl is a genetically diverse and visually varied breed. Males typically weigh between 3.5 to 5.5 kg, while females range from 2.5 to 4.5 kg, giving them an athletic yet refined presence.
Recognised by both TICA and CFA, the American Curl meets a specific breed standard. It features a moderately wedge-shaped head with a gentle nose break, walnut-shaped eyes that are expressive and harmonious with coat colour, and a long, plumed tail, especially prominent in longhaired varieties. The ears, set wide apart and curling elegantly backward, remain the breed’s hallmark. Beyond its looks, the American Curl is cherished for its affectionate, adaptable, and intelligent temperament. These cats bond deeply with their owners, often trailing behind them with kitten-like curiosity. They adjust easily to new environments, children, and other animals. Quiet and gentle, they communicate through soft chirps and trills, making them well-suited for family homes and multi-pet households.
The American Curl is known for being a robust and genetically healthy breed, thanks to early outcrossing practices. There are no known consistent breed-specific health issues, although regular ear care is essential due to the breed’s open ear structure. With routine cleaning and general wellness care, American Curls typically live 13 to 16 years or more. They are naturally clean cats and require minimal grooming, making them an excellent choice for first-time cat owners. Their combination of beauty, intelligence, and loving nature ensures that the American Curl is not only a visual standout—but a truly exceptional feline companion.
Despite their many virtues, the American Curl remains a rare breed, with only a handful of dedicated breeders across the globe. Each Curl is a testament to careful preservation, ethical breeding, and a deep respect for feline heritage.
At Snezha Siberians, we are honoured to continue the work of renowned American Curl breeders who laid the foundation for this extraordinary breed. Introducing our Curl lines to this part of the world is both an honour and privilege—to protect the purity of the breed while sharing its gentle beauty with new families in Singapore and beyond.

Cornish Rex

Cornish Rex *
The Cornish Rex is one of the most distinctive and elegant breeds in the feline world. With its sleek curves, extraordinarily soft, curly coat, and animated personality, it is both a visual marvel and an affectionate companion. Originating in Cornwall, England, in 1950, the breed began with a spontaneous genetic mutation that produced a kitten named Kallibunker, whose coat consisted only of soft down hairs. This mutation laid the foundation for the Cornish Rex, and through careful breeding with lines such as the Siamese and British Shorthair, the breed was preserved and refined. It gained international recognition by the 1960s and continues to be cherished for its rare appearance and lively disposition.
Physically, the Cornish Rex is fine-boned yet muscular, often compared to a feline greyhound for its elegant and agile build. The coat is incredibly short, soft, and wavy, lying close to the body and lacking guard hairs entirely—making it unusually warm to the touch. The head is wedge-shaped with prominent cheekbones, a straight Roman nose, a strong, rounded muzzle, and pronounced whisker pads that often carry curled whiskers. Large, high-set ears and oval, expressive eyes give the breed an open, alert expression. The long, tapering tail and refined limbs enhance its racy silhouette, while the tucked abdomen and small oval feet complete the balanced, athletic form.
Breed standards set by CFA and TICA describe the Cornish Rex as a cat of moderate size with a coat that should be uniformly rippled, often described as “marcelled.” The coat comes in all colours and patterns, including solid, tabby, tortoiseshell, pointed, smoke, and shaded variations. Eye colours range from copper to green to blue, depending on the coat. This broad variety, coupled with the breed’s unique fur texture, ensures that no two Cornish Rex cats are quite the same.
In temperament, the Cornish Rex is famously kitten-like throughout life—highly active, affectionate, and curious. These cats thrive on interaction, often playing fetch, climbing high places, and eagerly participating in family life. They bond deeply with their owners, often cuddling under blankets or seeking warmth in laps. Their sociable nature makes them ideal for families, and they tend to get along well with children, other cats, and friendly dogs. Intelligent and playful, they enjoy puzzles and thrive in homes that offer stimulation and companionship.
The Cornish Rex is generally a healthy and long-lived breed, with an average lifespan of 15 to 20 years. Thanks to its short, fine coat that lacks guard hairs, grooming needs are minimal—though occasional baths may help manage natural skin oils. Due to this unique coat structure, Cornish Rex cats shed significantly less than most other breeds and are often cited by allergy-friendly pet resources, such as Somerzby, as a potentially suitable option for allergy-sensitive households. While not scientifically proven to produce less Fel d 1 protein—the major cat allergen—their reduced shedding may help limit allergen dispersion in the home. Though no breed is truly hypoallergenic, many individuals with mild allergies report fewer symptoms with the Cornish Rex. At Snezha Siberians, we are honoured to preserve and promote this rare and captivating breed for those seeking an elegant, intelligent, and allergy-considerate feline companion.
